Habitat For Humanity
Making a lasting difference in the life of a family...
It’s been nearly six years since the world watched in horror as Hurricane Katrina devastated the US Gulf region in summer 2005, and nowhere was the destruction more evident than in New Orleans. The wealthiest nation in the world was powerless in the face of the forces of nature, as the numbers mounted: thousands killed, billions in damage, and hundreds of thousands left homeless, forced to scatter as refugees across the United States, separated from everything they had ever known.
You might think that life has gotten back to normal in New Orleans - there have been so many tragedies since, and the attention of the world has shifted elsewhere. However, for thousands of people in New Orleans, Hurricane Katrina might as well have been yesterday, because nothing has changed for them between then and now - they remain homeless, unable to return to their communities or to the lives they once enjoyed.
Habitat for Humanity, one of the most respected charities in the world, has been helping victims of Katrina since the earliest days of the disaster. Their strategy? Build sustainable housing for families, giving them back the dignity and empowerment of home ownership, while allowing them to partner in the process. We at Reconnect want to be a part of that solution. In November 2011 we will be sending a team of ten people to volunteer for a week as part of a Habitat build team in New Orleans, through Habitat’s Global Villages initiative and in cooperation with the local Habitat National Capital Region (NCR).
