gratitude

Travelling Light: gratitude

Reconnect – January 31, 2010

Text: Ephesians 5:1-4; Colossians 3:17

Key Thought: The life God wants us to enjoy with Him is grateful: recognizing the good and thanking God and others for bringing it to us.

Follow God’s example in everything you do, because you are his dear children. Live a life filled with love for others, following the example of Christ, who loved you and gave himself as a sacrifice to take away your sins. And God was pleased, because that sacrifice was like sweet perfume to him. Let there be no sexual immorality, impurity, or greed among you. Such sins have no place among God’s people. Obscene stories, foolish talk, and coarse jokes – these are not for you. Instead, let there be thankfulness to God.

forgiveness

Travelling Light: forgiveness

Reconnect – January 24, 2010

Text: Ephesians 4:30-32; Luke 6:35-38

Key Thought: The life God wants us to enjoy with Him is forgiving: responding to wrongs with the grace that He gives us.

And do not bring sorrow to God’s Holy Spirit by the way you live. Remember, he is the one who has identified you as his own, guaranteeing that you will be saved on the day of redemption. Get rid of all bitterness, rage, anger, harsh words, and slander, as well as all types of malicious behaviour. Instead be kind to each other, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, just as God through Christ has forgiven you.

sincerity

Travelling Light: sincerity

Reconnect – January 17, 2010

Text: Ephesians 4:29; Romans 12:9-10

Key Thought: The life God wants us to enjoy with Him is sincere: honest, open and from the heart.

Don’t use foul or abusive language. Let everything you say be good and helpful, so that your words will be an encouragement to those who hear them.

Travelling Light: generosity

Reconnect – January 10, 2010

Text: Ephesians 4:28; II Corinthians 9:7-8

Key Thought: The life God wants us to enjoy with Him is generous: honest, hard-working and giving.

If you are a thief, stop stealing. Begin using your hands for honest work, and then give generously to others in need. Ephesians 4:28, NLT

simplicity

Travelling Light: simplicity

Reconnect – January 3, 2010

Text: Ephesians 4:21-27; Matthew 6:31-33

Key Thought: The life God wants us to enjoy with Him is simple: free of phoniness, confusion and anxiety.

Since you have heard all about him and have learned the truth that is in Jesus, throw off your old evil nature and your former way of life, which is rotten through and through, full of lust and deception. Instead, there must be a spiritual renewal of your thoughts and attitudes. You must display a new nature because you are a new person, created in God’s likeness – righteous, holy, and true. So put away all falsehood and ‘tell your neighbour the truth’ because we belong to each other. And ‘don’t sin by letting anger gain control over you.’ Don’t let the sun go down while you are still angry, for anger gives a mighty foothold to the Devil. Eph. 4:21-27, NLT

John says WE do

Who Needs Jesus, Anyway? (John says WE do.)

Reconnect – Christmas Eve, 2009

Text: John 1:1-14; Romans 7:21-25

Key Thought: We need Jesus to bring us a new kind of life from God.

In the beginning the Word already existed. The Word was with God, and the Word was God. He existed in the beginning with God. God created everything through him, and nothing was created except through him. The Word gave life to everything that was created, and his life brought light to everyone. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness can never extinguish it. God sent a man, John the Baptist, to tell about the light so that everyone might believe because of his testimony. John himself was not the light; he was simply a witness to tell about the light. The one who is the true light, who gives light to everyone, was coming into the world. He came into the very world he created, but the world didn’t recognize him. He came to his own people, and even they rejected him. But to all who believed him and accepted him, he gave the right to become children of God. They are reborn—not with a physical birth resulting from human passion or plan, but a birth that comes from God. So the Word became human and made his home among us. He was full of unfailing love and faithfulness. And we have seen his glory, the glory of the Father’s one and only Son. ”

Luke says WE do

Who Needs Jesus, Anyway? (Luke says WE do.)

Reconnect – December 20, 2009

Text: Luke 1:39-56, I John 4:9-11

Key Thought: We need Jesus to push us to love people we’d rather not.

Mary responded, “Oh, how I praise the Lord, How I rejoice in God my Saviour! For he took notice of his lowly servant girl, And now generation after generation will call me blessed. For he, the Mighty One, is holy, And he has done great things for me. His mercy goes on from generation to generation, To all who fear him. His mighty arm does tremendous things! How he scatters the proud and haughty ones! He has taken princes from their thrones And exalted the lowly. He has satisfied the hungry with good things And sent the rich away with empty hands. And how he has helped his servant Israel! He has not forgotten his promise to be merciful. For he promised our ancestors – Abraham and his children – To be merciful to them forever.”

Mark says WE do

Who Needs Jesus, Anyway? (Mark says WE do.)

Reconnect – December 13, 2009

Text: Mark 1:1-11; Hebrews 4:14-16

Key Thought: We need Jesus to show us how to make a difference in people’s lives.

This is the Good News about Jesus the Messiah, the Son of God. It began just as the prophet Isaiah had written: “Look, I am sending my messenger ahead of you, and he will prepare your way. He is a voice shouting in the wilderness,‘Prepare the way for the LORD’s coming! Clear the road for him!’” This messenger was John the Baptist. He was in the wilderness and preached that people should be baptized to show that they had turned from their sins and turned to God to be forgiven. All of Judea, including all the people of Jerusalem, went out to see and hear John. And when they confessed their sins, he baptized them in the Jordan River. His clothes were woven from coarse camel hair, and he wore a leather belt around his waist. For food he ate locusts and wild honey. John announced: “Someone is coming soon who is greater than I am—so much greater that I’m not even worthy to stoop down like a slave and untie the straps of his sandals. I baptize you with water, but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit!” One day Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee, and John baptized him in the Jordan River. As Jesus came up out of the water, he saw the heavens splitting apart and the Holy Spirit descending on him like a dove. And a voice from heaven said, “You are my dearly loved Son, and you bring me great joy.” Mark 1:1-11, NLT

Matthew says WE do.

Who Needs Jesus, Anyway? (Matthew says WE do.)

Reconnect – December 6, 2009

Text: Matthew 1:18-25; I Timothy 5:24-25

Key Thought: We need Jesus to help us live life alongside God.

Now this is how Jesus the Messiah was born. His mother, Mary, was engaged to be married to Joseph. But while she was still a virgin, she became pregnant by the Holy Spirit. Joseph, her fiancé, being a just man, decided to break the engagement quietly, so as not to disgrace her publicly. As he considered this, he fell asleep, and an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream. “Joseph, son of David,” the angel said, “do not be afraid to go ahead with your marriage to Mary. For the child within her has been conceived by the Holy Spirit. And she will have a son, and you are to name him Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.” All of this happened to fulfill the Lord’s message through his prophet: Look! The virgin will conceive a child! She will give birth to a son,And he will be called Immanuel(meaning, God is with us.)When Joseph woke up, he did what the angel of the Lord commanded. He brought Mary home to be his wife, but she remained a virgin until her son was born. And Joseph named him Jesus. Matthew 1:18-25, NLT

Jesus Brings Light

Jesus brings LIGHT (participation service)

Reconnect – November 29, 2009

Text: John 1:1-9, 3:30-34, 1:10-13; 8:12

Key Thought: Jesus offers light: his life and hope to anyone who will humbly receive him as King.

“He must become greater and greater, and I must become less and less. He has come from above and is greater than anyone else. I am of the earth, and my understanding is limited to the things of earth, but he has come from heaven. He tells what he has seen and heard, but how few believe what he tells them! Those who believe him discover that God is true. For he is sent by God.” John the Baptist, in John 3:30-34
